Speech Times & Info

SPEECH POINTERS:

  • Give your speech a title: One of the most important things you need before starting any of these speeches is a great title!   Make sure you have a creative title that captures your listener's attention and makes them wonder what the speech will be about. 
  • Organize your speech to make it easy to follow and understand. 
  • Make your message clear by supporting your points and opinions with specific facts, examples and/or illustrations.
  • Use accurate transitions when moving from one idea to another
  • Create a strong opening and conclusion
  • Reference your topic's general and specific purposes in the beginning, body and conclusion of your speech 
  • Use stance, movement, gestures, facial expressions, eye contact, and body language to express your message.
  • Use rhetorical devices to enhance and emphasize your ideas.
  • Select right words and sentence structure to communicate your ideas clearly, accurately and vividly.
  • Eliminate jargon and unnecessary words.
  • Use correct grammar.
  • Use Stories, anecdotes and quotes to add drama.


 Speakers are NOT ALLOWED TO READ their speeches but may use a SIMPLE OUTLINE to help guide them.

SPEECHES /TIMES* this is not a long time so the arrangement of your ideas and topics is very important.  Speak to the point and avoid rambling during your speech.  

First: Icebreaker Speech  (All Grades: 3-4 minutes)
Tell about yourself. This should be easy to do! 

Give your speech a "theme" and creative title to gain the interest of your audience.
  This can be a basic "timeline" speech (good for beginner speakers)
        Name, age, where you were born.
        Family- Parents names, occupations. Siblings, names, ages etc.
        Hobbies, sports, or interests you have. Tell about your home life, any pets, etc.
   OR 
Tell us about something in your life and how it has helped you grow of how it affected your life.-- This is how we find out a little more about you. 

Second: Passion Speech  (All Grades: 4-6 minutes) 
Now you get to elaborate a bit more on one of your interests.
Tell what you are most passionate about.
A sport, hobby, musical instrument, fashion, technology, etc. 
or What future job are you interested in?

Third: Vocal Variety and Props Speech  (All Grades: 5-7 minutes)
Use voice, volume and pitch to add meaning and interest to your message.
Use pauses to enhance your message.
Use vocal variety smoothly and naturally.
Select visual aids that are appropriate for your message and add value.
Use visual aids correctly and with ease and confidence

Fourth: Persuasion (All Grades: 5-7 minutes)
Persuade listeners to adopt your viewpoint or ideas or to take some action.
Appeal to the audience's interest.
Use logic and emotion to support your position.

Answer these questions (or similar ones) to give details in your speech.
1. What is your dream job--or job you would like to do in the future?
2. Explain or give examples of what someone in this job might do (help us understand what the job is about) don't assume your audience knows all the details)
3. What are the requirements or skills needed for this job?
4. Why should we hire you for this job--Why do you want this job?
5. What experience do you bring if any to this job? or what experience do you hope to get from this job?
6. Why would your skill sets make you beneficial to this job?  Why would you be good at this job?
7. What are some skill sets that you feel you need to improve upon to be best at this job- and how would you improve them?
8. Summarize why you are the best candidate for this job... or once you graduate, why this is the job you feel God calling you to do.
